Session Description:
Water resources in western North America are increasingly vulnerable to drought, increased consumptive water use, and climate change. Water management must meet the challenges of both greater water demands and changing water supplies. Research in areas as diverse as groundwater hydrology, baseflow modeling, land surface feedbacks on runoff, and ocean/atmosphere effects on hydroclimate can help inform water resource management. Modeling and observational studies, along with paleoclimatic research, continue to improve the basic understanding of hydroclimatic and hydrologic variability, while collaboration with resource managers has resulted in research relevant to planning and management concerns. Anthropogenic activities add complexity and create an urgency to better understand climatic and anthropogenic impacts on water resources. Recent events such as the California drought, groundwater overpumping, and the drawdown of western reservoirs, all provide a compelling case for an interdisciplinary session addressing these challenges in western North America.
