Session ID#: 15692
Session Description:
Over the past several decades, various parts of Africa have been impacted by droughts and/or flooding to varying degrees of severity related to local sensitivity to complex interactions and feedbacks between land-cover/land-use change, rainfall variability, surface and ground-water dynamics, river and floodplain interactions, atmospheric circulation patterns, as well as local and transported aerosol and greenhouse gas emissions. Possible impacts include increasing uncertainty of food security and complexity of environmental decision-making. Reliable climate prediction on seasonal-to-decadal timescales based on improved understanding of various physical mechanisms and their spatiotemporal scales of variability will help mitigate their environmental and socio-economic impacts, and enhance sustainable livelihood, especially water availability and food security. This session encourages interdisciplinary studies aimed at unraveling the links between various environmental phenomena and their associated processes and outcomes, including societal impacts. We welcome research and applications based on all types of observational, analysis, and modeling resources
