Taking the Temperature of the Earth: Challenges, Trends, and Applications across all Earth Surface Domains III

Session Description:
Surface temperature (ST) is a critical variable for studying the energy and water balances of the Earth surface, and monitoring the effects of climate change, and there is an urgent need for better understanding of in situ measurements and satellite observations to quantify ST as it changes from day to day, month to month. The EarthTemp network was established in 2012 to stimulate new international collaboration in measuring and better understanding ST across different domains of the Earth’s surface: air, land, sea, lakes, ice. This EarthTemp session is focused on 1) progress in improving the quality of ST products, 2) assessing variability and long-term trends, and 3) applications of ST data to detect and better understand Earth system behavior.
