Session Description:
Earth’s magnetic field provides a view into the internal dynamics of the deep interior. The paleomagnetic record reveals that the geodynamo is ancient and seemingly persistent, but the mechanisms responsible for its generation throughout Earth history remain elusive. Motivated by major questions, such as the timing of inner core nucleation, efforts are pushing the frontiers of the paleomagnetic record through experimental work and data synthesis. Theoretical models, constrained by the requirement of maintaining a geodynamo through time despite high core conductivity, may offer predictions for ancient field behavior. This session seeks to bring together perspectives from the observational community with those from the modeling community to convene on the current state of the geodynamo's history. We invite contributions that utilize paleomagnetic observations to constrain the intensity or directional variation of the field and contributions that utilize numerical models or theory to gain insight into the deep interior's history and dynamics.
