Session Description:
Knowledge of the elastic properties of Earth's mantle materials is essential for understanding the radial and lateral variations of seismic velocities and seismic anisotropy in the mantle, as well as features like the Large Low Shear Velocity Provinces and complex features in the upper mantle and transition zone. The elastic properties of mantle minerals and melts also provide necessary information for developing models of the internal structure and dynamic behavior of our planet. The improvement of both experimental and computational techniques has recently allowed breakthroughs in elasticity studies. However, many questions remain unanswered about the mechanisms that produce a range of seismic anomalies and discontinuities. This session aims to bring together contributions that emphasize the elastic behavior of mantle materials, as well as related contributions from seismology to inspire collaborative discussions, to provide better understanding of the structure and dynamics of Earth’s mantle from the Moho to the core-mantle boundary.
