Session Description:
Properties of geophysical and heliophysical systems depend on complex cross-scale interactions between the waves they support (inertia-gravity, Alfven or whistler, ...), and nonlinear eddies. Can the flow be treated as a superposition of quasi-linear waves at any scale? How does the resolution of small-scale dynamics affect large-scale turbulence? Indeed, breaking waves generate flow variability and can in turn affect the overall circulation, posing difficulties to subgrid-scale modeling and leading to poor predictive value. In this session, we invite contributions using theoretical and modeling, numerical and experimental methodologies, stressing the commonality of properties within diverse contexts, the key role of anisotropy and the variation of scaling laws with dimensionless parameters. Applications range from the atmosphere and troposphere to the ocean and to space weather, e.g. in the Solar Wind and the magnetosphere, with a particular emphasis on anomalous dissipation and mixing, dual cascades, the formation of coherent structures and extreme events.
