Session Description:
This session focuses on the iron-based alloys of planetary cores. We offer a platform for discussing the most recent advancements in the mineral physics of these materials and their implications for characterizing the present-day state of the core and its evolution. We encourage submissions about the transport properties, both thermal and electrical, and about the seismic properties of the iron alloys. We will pay special attention to chemical aspects: solubility of light elements, partitioning between the mantle and liquid metal, partitioning between solid and liquid iron, and isotope fractionation. We want to go one step further and discuss the possible mineral basis of the differences and similarities between the iron-based cores of different planetary bodies. We welcome contributions from computational and experimentalist mineral physicists, geodynamicists, seismologists, geochemists, planetologists, and other geoscientists with core interests.
