Session Description:
Cratonic lithosphere underlies the stable, largely un-deformed cores of most continents globally. Archean cratons are often assumed to have a relatively simple internal architecture, with more complex structure (Moho topography and deep crust) in slightly younger Proterozoic blocks. In a number of locations around the globe, these thick, rheologically strong lithospheric blocks are juxtaposed immediately adjacent to regions of ongoing or geologically recent upper mantle deformation, such as the Cordilleras of North and South America. This sharp contrast in physical properties (e.g., temperature, viscosity, composition) leads to relatively unique dynamic conditions which have significant impact on the evolution of both the stable cratonic lithosphere and deformation within the tectonically active margin.

We invite contributions from different domains (seismology, geodynamics, geodesy, petrology, geochemistry, etc) to share their results which examine the crustal and lithospheric evolution of craton margins, including both the craton itself and the neighbouring tectonically active region.
