Subduction Zone Earthquakes and the Role of Asperities in Rupture Propagation and Aftershock Sequences: Insights from the 16 April 2016 Pedernales, Ecuador Earthquake II

Session Description:
On April 16, 2016 the subduction zone offshore Ecuador ruptured in a Mw 7.8 earthquake just north of the intersection of the Carnegie Ridge with the trench, a region of increased interseismic coupling as measured by GPS. The event is the largest earthquake in Ecuador since a similar portion of the subduction zone ruptured in 1942. The subduction zone adjacent to and north of the Carnegie Ridge has ruptured on decadal time scales in Mw 7.7-7.8 events, and a Mw 8.8 event in 1906. Increases in observational capabilities provide new opportunities to study the role of asperities in focusing stress, promoting and/or inhibiting rupture propagation, and the role of slow slip events in the earthquake cycle. We invite submissions from a range of disciplines on the Pedernales earthquake, seismicity and deformation along the subduction system in Ecuador and adjacent regions, and the role of asperities in subduction zone earthquakes.
