Session Description:
There is large uncertainty in our understanding of regional changes in the climate system and the extent to which they are influenced by anthropogenic aerosols. Aerosols, the largest forcing uncertainty over the industrial period, are important since their forcing is spatially heterogeneous and can counteract greenhouse gas forcing. By modulating radiation and altering cloud properties, aerosols affect surface and atmospheric heating gradients and precipitation, resulting in atmospheric circulation changes. The objective of this session is to improve the understanding of mechanisms and pathways for the aerosol impact on regional climate worldwide. Observational and modeling studies focusing on changes in variability, long-term trends, and extremes in the hydrological cycle, in the recent past as well as the coming decades, are particularly solicited. We encourage papers investigating the impact of aerosols on monsoon systems, ITCZ, tropical-extratropical interactions and teleconnections, modes of variability, and the role of local versus remote aerosol emissions.
