Session Description:
Dust storms are a powerful way of cascading the impacts of global climate variations onto the environment and society at local and regional scales. Climate models have consistently projected a drying trend in the subtropics, implying increasing environmental stress imposed by dust activities. These stresses range from degraded air quality, intensified land erosion, increased infectious diseases, to even “Dust Bowl”-type disasters. Meanwhile, shift in precipitation patterns alters dust transport to the oceans, affecting ocean primary productivity and its capacity to absorb atmospheric carbon. This session will discuss the cutting-edge advance in our current understanding of the processes controlling dust emission, transport and deposition, with a focus on the regional and global variations and trends of dust activity, the driving forces behind the variations, and potential societal impacts on air quality, public health, agriculture, transportation and other sectors.
