Session Description:
The Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) is located near the Earth’s first Lagrange point (L1) where it monitors the solar wind and observes the Earth with two Earth Science sensors. The Earth sensors measure the radiative fluxes of the entire dayside of Earth as well as key spectral radiative characteristics at 10-15 km resolution. The unique near backscatter angular perspective of DSCOVR is used in science applications to measure ozone, aerosols, cloud height, vegetation properties, and to obtain UV radiation estimates at Earth's surface. The session will focus on the novel perspective of Earth observations obtained from L1. It will also have discussions on how DSCOVR measurements complement existing data from low Earth orbit and geostationary orbit observations. Particular attention will be paid to innovative features in observations of aerosol transport, photosynthesizing systems and to the role of the diurnal distribution of clouds on Earth’s radiation budget.
