Emergence of a Regional to Global Observing System for Air Quality: Integrating Tropospheric Composition Observations, Models, and Uncertainty Characterization II

Session Description:
A system of global air quality observations is emerging with a constellation of satellites in geostationary (GEMS, TEMPO, Sentinel-4) and low-Earth (Sentinel-5P/TROPOMI) orbits as its centerpiece. Maximizing the science, applications, and ultimate societal benefit achieved by this unique observing capability requires integration with existing and emerging measurement technologies and models. Field campaigns such as DISCOVER-AQ, KORUS-AQ, and AROMAT are actively exploring the required multi-perspective strategies. Presentations are solicited on all aspects of this important challenge, including:

  • Preparatory field campaigns
  • Retrieval algorithm developments
  • Harmonizing and validating data products from multiple (polar/geostationary) platforms/sensors
  • Other prospective satellite observations contributing to this observing system
  • Techniques using remote sensing (satellite, airborne, ground) to characterize key physical variables, e.g., boundary layer dynamics and its relationship to near-surface pollution
  • Modeling at finer spatial and temporal resolutions
  • Advances in data assimilation, inverse methods, and OSSEs for tropospheric composition
  • High-density observations (e.g., personal monitors)
  • Assessing societal impacts of pollution
