Improving Physical Process Representation in Global Models I

Session Description:
Use of detailed observations, theoretical understanding and process modeling to improve the physical processes representation in global models is a top research priority of US CLIVAR and the broader earth science community. Translation of improved understanding from process studies to earth system models (ESMs) include identification of poorly represented physical processes; improved representation of the process via parameterization or by explicit representation; rigorous evaluation of these changes. These approaches require contributions from many different specialists. Hence, more rapid communication between these various groups would speed progress. 

 This session intends to facilitate this progress by (1) identifying opportunities for transferring new process understanding to improve physical process representation and (2) diagnosing primary sources of error in models that limit performance and require improved process-understanding.  Submissions addressing interactions between different components of ESMs are particularly encouraged, such as – but not limited to – atmosphere-land-ocean-cryosphere interactions, as are advances facilitating scale-insensitive parameterization.
