Session Description:
Recent field, numerical, and theoretical studies have increased our understanding of oceanic strike-slip faults by examining the processes that control their formation and evolution at a range of spatial and temporal scales. Seismological and laboratory studies of rupture and slip mechanics have added to our understanding of their behaviors over seismic time scales. Structural and geochemical observations have provided insight into transform fault behavior from decades to centuries. Observations and numerical models of fracture zones and long-term transform fault evolution have informed our understanding of how transform plate boundaries form and evolve over geologic time in response to changes in plate motions. The goal of this session is to bring together the latest observations and models from multiple disciplines, covering a range of spatial and temporal scales to enhance our understanding of oceanic strike-slip faults and transform plate boundaries.
