Session Description:
It is estimated that approximately 30% of total CH4 emissions are a result of both natural and anthropogenic sources on the seafloor (Ciais et al.  2014). However, these emissions are not well characterized and observations are limited to relatively short timescales in a few select, heavily instrumented, regions (e.g., Barnes and Tunnicliffe 2008). Additionally, upward transport pathways and the fate of emitted CH4 from these sources is poorly constrained resulting in substantial uncertainty in models of natural CH4 injection and carbon cycling in the ocean and atmosphere (Stocker et al. 2013). This session seeks contributions focused on quantifying fundamental processes of hydrocarbon emissions, transport, and cycling in the geosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. Results of field, laboratory, and numerical modeling investigations are welcomed and those integrating observational scales (e.g. linking bubble processes with plume detection and regional geological controls) or differentiating natural and anthropogenic emissions are encouraged.
