Microphysical and Macroscopic Properties of Ice Clouds and Mixed-Phase Clouds: Linking In Situ, Remote Sensing Observations and Multiscale Models I

Session Description:
Ice and mixed-phase clouds have large impacts on Earth’s climate. A composite analysis of in-situ, remote sensing observations and multi-scale model simulations is needed for understanding their formation and evolution.

We encourage studies that combine observations and model simulations on various scales to improve the capabilities of these approaches to investigate ice and mixed-phase clouds, and to quantify their impacts on regional and global climate. Relevant topics include: (1) observationally-based analyses of ice and mixed-phased clouds from cloud scales to regional and global scales, (2) assessments of ice crystal and liquid droplet microphysical properties, (3) cloud macrophysical characteristics, including spatial extent, heterogeneities and temporal variabilities, (4) sub-grid scale variabilities of relative humidity, water vapor, temperature and vertical velocity in model parameterizations, (5) radiative forcing of ice and mixed-phased clouds from observations, reanalysis data and model simulations, (6) observationally-constrained estimates of the climate impacts of ice and mixed-phase clouds.
