Session Description:
The East Asian monsoon is a dynamically complex system influenced by a number of factors, including land-ocean contrasts between the continent and surrounding Indian and Pacific oceans, the varied topography in particular the Tibetan Plateau, and the atmospheric circulations impinging on it.  The East Asian monsoon system evolved on geologic timescales, in particular in response to Tibetan uplift, to what it is today.  Today's monsoon undergoes significant variations, as evidenced by observed interannual and decadal variability; it also underwent significant and abrupt changes in the distant past to millennial and orbital forcing.  However, the dynamics of these changes remain poorly understood, and with implication for our understanding of its future.  In this session, we aim to bridge paleoclimate with contemporary studies of the East Asian monsoon, bringing together observational (paleoproxy and instrumental), modeling, and theoretical perspectives towards a fundamental dynamical understanding of the East Asian monsoon system.
