Session Description:
Aerosol composition is the characterization of aerosols by species or by type. The next generation of satellites in NASA’s Aerosol/Cloud/Ecosystems (ACE) mission will “distinguish aerosol types and associated optical properties and size,” recognizing the need for further advancements in retrieving component aerosols. Recent advances in remote sensing instrumentation and techniques have enabled the component quantification of pure dust, polluted dust, marine, urban, smoke, black carbon, brown carbon, soluble aerosols, and aerosol water content. These advances have been used to evaluate modeled emissions and aerosol component optical properties (i.e., AOD and AAOD) on a global scale. We seek active and passive techniques for determining component aerosol concentrations, optical depths, absorption optical depths, and size from satellite, airborne, or surface platforms. We encourage submissions of retrieval methods that are based upon radiance, polarized radiance, irradiance, lidar, or other remote sensing measurements.
