Session Description:
The unique properties of salt (halite) – including low permeability, viscoplastic (creep) mechanical behavior, and fracture healing – make it highly desirable for the storage of oil, natural gas, compressed gases, and radioactive waste. These materials are stored in solution-mined caverns in salt domes, or in mined repositories in bedded and domal salts. Extensive research has been performed on crystalline structure relating to creep and permeability, long-term effects of volume closure on surface structures and facilities, and long-term capability of salt repositories to isolate stored material from the surrounding environment. This session invites presentations that focus on experimental, computational, or field studies of salt in a variety of applications, including, but not limited to: engineered barriers; geologic storage of hydrocarbons, gases, and radwaste; structural integrity of caverns, repositories, and wellbore casings; and physical properties of salt such as shear strength, creep at low deviatoric stress, and salt damage characterization/propagation.
