Session Description:
A major issue in quantifying and attributing fluxes of greenhouse gases from urban areas and other hot-spots (e.g., oil and gas exploration) is that of balancing bottom-up data products with atmospheric observations. While bottom-up data are critical for managing pollutant emissions, they are largely based on extrapolations of source supply (e.g., oil or coal), burning efficiency, laboratory studies, and scrubbing ability. Estimates of greenhouse gas uptake by soils, plants, and surfaces are similarly based on extrapolations of laboratory and field studies. Conversely, top-down studies involving atmospheric observations and models can estimate mass balances without relying on bottom-up information, but require a considered approach involving monitoring of air composition and meteorology. In the end these two approaches need to match if we are to have confidence in emission estimates. This session invites papers that address challenges and successes in comparing these approaches, contrasting measurement methods, or synthesizing measurements and models.
