Session Description:
With the passing of the 50 year anniversary of plate tectonics it is timely to review our understanding of the state of the stress in the Earth with an eye both on traditional approaches for quantifying the stress tensor as well as new approaches that have recently been developed to describing the stress state in the Earth’s crust. Tentative discussion topic include the plate-scale background state of stress, evaluation of stress concentrates (e.g., critically stressed faults), induced seismicity, and novel methods for evaluating the stress tensor using borehole imaging. Presentations related to machine learning as it applies to calculating the stress tensor in the earth at reservoir scales are encouraged.
