Strain Localization in the Lithosphere: From Experiments to Nature I

Session Description:
Strain localization occurs throughout the lithosphere and spans orders of magnitude in scale. In the upper crust, seismic and aseismic brittle faults are the primary form of localization; at higher temperatures, ductile processes dominate. A more complete understanding of processes resulting in strain localization can be provided by microfabrics. However, the interpretation of fabric found in naturally-deformed rocks can be challenging because of the complex interplay of factors such as composition, temperature, stress, and strain-rate. Due to the better control of these factors in laboratory experiments, experimental studies enable to link the observed microfabrics to those found in nature and draw conclusions towards the operative deformation mechanisms, allowing further understanding of faulting processes, earthquake dynamics and deformation localization. In this session, we invite contributions from field observations, laboratory experiments, and numerical modeling constraining deformation mechanisms and mechanical and physical properties of rocks in brittle and ductile regimes during localization processes.
