Linking Surface and Upper Crustal Kinematics to Deeper Crust and Mantle Flow in Collisions II

Session Description:
Structural, chronological, geomorphic and geodetic studies of near surface kinematics in active orogens show a range of behaviors, including fold–thrust belts, footwall duplexing, major strike-slip shear, plateaus, extensional collapse of unsupported topography, and upwards extrusion of material from the deeper crust. 

The extent to which the colliding lithospheres underneath force or follow these patterns is not well understood. In active orogens, flow at deeper levels must be inferred from geophysical datasets. The internal regions of ancient orogens reveal deeper patterns of deformation and metamorphism, but how these linked to surface movements is difficult to interpret. Numerical simulations are often used to test limiting cases.

We invite contributions from any discipline that explores how flow is coupled both vertically and laterally in the lithosphere during orogeny. Participants are encouraged to consider how their work illuminates connections between kinematics and mass transfer from the deepest to the shallowest levels of collisions.
