Accretion Modes, Structure, and Processes at Slow- and Ultra-slow Spreading Mid-Ocean Ridges I

Session Description:
Slow- and ultra-slow mid-ocean ridges such as the Mid-Atlantic and Southwest Indian often function differently from fast spreading ones. Several modes of lithospheric accretion operate, ranging from magmatic to amagmatic. Here deformation can localize forming oceanic detachment faults, resulting in asymmetric accretion with complex interactions between magmatic, tectonic and hydrothermal processes along the plate boundary. Lithospheric structure and composition are thus extremely variable along such ridges, ranging from the ’classical’ layered model to a peridotite-dominated lithosphere with variable amounts of gabbro.  We seek contributions from recent experiments over a broad range of topics and approaches, including seismicity, seismic reflection and refraction, near-seafloor high-resolution geophysical surveys, geological observations, drilling, geochemistry, fluid chemistry, and modelling. We aim to facilitate discussions, connections and collaborations among these diverse groups and methodologies, so as to understand the controls on different modes of accretion and their consequences for the formation and evolution of oceanic lithosphere.
