Mesozoic to Recent Evolution of the Gulf of Mexico Basin from Integrated Geologic and Geophysical Data Sets II

Session Description:
The Gulf of Mexico basin preserves a deeply buried, late Jurassic age spreading center, an adjacent area of oceanic crust, up to 4 km of salt, and an overlying passive margin section up to 12 km in thickness.  Advancing geophysical methods are now capable of addressing many questions of the basin’s longterm evolution that were previously stymied by its thick sedimentary fill. These questions include: 1) amount and style of continental stretching at its edges; 2) precise locations of its continent-ocean boundaries; 3) role of large-scale strike-slip faulting in the opening of the basin; 4) progradation and progressive infilling of the basin by its clastic and carbonate passive margins; and 5) evolving paleooceanography and circulation within the enclosed basin.  We invite multidisciplinary disciplinary contributions on these and other questions related to the evolution of the sedimentary fill, crust, and upper mantle of the Gulf of Mexico basin.
