Session ID#: 16684
Session Description:
With recent widespread enhancement of remote tracking technologies, maritime vessel activity is now generating a wealth of “big data.” Machine learning and heuristic-based techniques harness data from Automatic Identification Systems, Vessel Monitoring Systems, Synthetic Aperture Radar, and electro-optical imaging to identify real-time patterns in human movements at sea. Using these data, scientists can now analyze maritime activity to investigate myriad of topics.
This session will focus on data platforms and analytical techniques being developed to explore the impacts of maritime activity on the ocean through remote sensing, including: determining the extent of sound permeation caused by maritime traffic; overlap of industrial activities (e.g., seismic exploration) with migratory marine megafauna corridors and critical habitat; estimating global real-time commerical fishing effort; quantifying fishing effort relative to biophysical global frontal boundaries; and identifying “dark fleets” with radar and imagery. Combining vessel observations with other biophysical observations of the ocean are also welcomed.
