Session Description:
Virtually all the world's major cites have developed in sedimentary basins and experience rapid urbanization growth, and this usually enhances their susceptibility to a range of geological hazards: basin resonance can amplify seismic waves, subsidence due to groundwater extraction and/or aquifer depletion during drought can damage buildings and infrastructure, contaminated surface waters can leach into subsurface potable water supplies, etc. Traditional approaches establish site-specific hazard by using cone penetration test, microtremor and borehole measurements. Novel approaches use remote sensing (e.g. InSAR) to map surface deformation (subsidence), active and passive seismic methods to image the elastic and anelastic large-scale basin structure and to characterize seismic amplification during earthquakes, microgravity and electromagnetic methods for identifying karsts and complex sedimentary structure. This session aims to bring together researchers in these various fields to discuss their application to the reduction of urban geohazard risk.
