Toward a Unified and Worldwide Database of Earthquake Surface Ruptures I

Session Description:
The session will address issues related to surface rupture hazard which can result in damage to structures located nearby active faults. Recent earthquakes have shown that distributed surface faulting can be of engineering significance, even for moderate quakes. In the probabilistic approach (PFDHA), the attenuation term describing the decrease of displacement with distance is based on sparsely populated databases. There is thus a need to build a worldwide, unified and standardized dataset with an improved spatial completeness and a broad magnitude range.  We encourage contributions that provide field data on earthquake ruptures, explore the impact of "site-specific" conditions such as surficial geology, develop remote sensing techniques to enrich the dataset based on classical field measurements, and present how uncertainties are treated. This session is proposed in the framework of INQUA and IAEA projects with the aim of using the updated database for a robust calibration of PFDHA attenuation parameters.
