Session Description:
Research data resides in myriads of independent domain-specific, domain-independent and institutional repositories. These repositories may organize information and support search by datasets, samples, time series, individual observations, etc. Different information models, granularity levels, access mechanisms, and semantic conventions make cross-domain data search far from a trivial task. Further, it is unclear to what extent existing search mechanisms meet the evolving data discovery needs of geoscientists.


This session aims to explore the challenges and new approaches that those who produce data, and those who build systems that enable data discovery, share. Topics include:

  • Methods to improve relevance ranking
  • Federated data search: practice and problems

  • Searching across different types and granularity levels of information
  • Customized web crawling
  • Text mining and NLP to enrich results and enable faceted search
  • Describing dataset relationships for improved scoring by search engines
  • Modeling of user behavior
  • New search paradigms and visual interfaces
