Session Description:
Hydrological models are assemblages of hypotheses about the behavior of natural systems. The use of these hypotheses within the models is often poorly justified, which may result in model structures and parameterizations inconsistent with the insights gained in experimental catchments. This session invites contributions including (but not limited to): (1) efforts to strengthen the link between existing theory and hydrologic models and evaluation of process explanations developed in research catchments; (2) new formulations for model components to faithfully represent the internal and external system behavior, and new formulations for better presenting dominant controls (such as thresholds); and (3) new methods to evaluate and select among model alternatives using highly uncertain data. The intent of this session is to accelerate the implementation of different theories that explain individual processes, process interactions, patterns and scaling behavior; and to discuss the testing and refinement of these theories using both quantitative and qualitative analyses.
