Session Description:
There is increasing demand for management and enhancement of ecosystem services ranging from water supply for irrigation to climate stabilization in rural, urban, forest, grassland, and other ecosystems. Linking biophysical processes to their benefits for people; exploring synergies and tradeoffs; and considering the needs of diverse users remain major research needs. A particular focus has been incentive-based policies that link upstream water producers with downstream water consumers through “Payments for Watershed Services” (PWS). Limited understanding of the complex interactions and feedbacks within coupled PWS-social-ecological systems has hampered ability to achieve watershed sustainability goals, and contributed to scrutiny over their effectiveness as policy tools. This session encourages submissions with a holistic and management-oriented focus; interdisciplinary research aimed at understanding the integrated drivers that underpin PWS and other ecosystem service programs; and emerging approaches for design, monitoring, and evaluation. We hope that papers will evolve into a special interdisciplinary journal issue.
