Session Description:
Few satellite missions have had as large an impact on a field as satellite altimetry has had on oceanography, climate science and geodesy. The measurement of sea surface height from space has provided a 24-year record of oceanographic and climatic change, provided insight into the rich mesoscale dynamics of the ocean, revolutionized operational oceanography and refined knowledge of the marine geoid to allow global maps of the sea floor at 1-arc minute resolution. With the recent launch of Jason-3 and Sentinal-3A, and ongoing data observation by Jason-2, CryoSat-II, HY-2 and SARAL/AltiKa, we are now in a golden era for traditional satellite altimetry. This session seeks abstracts that span the broad array of science and operational results from traditional satellite altimetry, as well as results that pave the way for future, high-resolution altimeters.
