Citizen Science, Low-Cost Sensors, and Remote Sensing Applications in Data-Scarce Regions I

Session Description:
This session will highlight opportunities and challenges for cutting-edge research, innovative data collection and integrated modeling approaches to tackle hydrologic and earth sciences research and solutions in data scarce regions.

Research presented in this session may include:

1) Socially relevant ways of framing scientific questions so as to target research to address the most critical knowledge gaps.

2) Locally appropriate, scientifically valid data collection using low-cost sensing and instrumentation methods.

3) Use of remote sensing and global weather datasets for hydrologic modeling.

4) Community engagement through citizen science, crowdsourcing and participatory data acquisition.

5) Innovative use of information technology and mobile applications in data acquisition.

The session will highlight problem driven approaches to addressing critical environment, development and public health challenges and will be especially useful to developing world researchers, who face the multiple challenges of inadequate historical data, critical science-policy gaps and limited budgets.
