Session Description:
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are disruptive technology, transforming the quality and volume of data geoscientists collect, particularly with the availability of cost-effective, lightweight and stable platforms. Scanning techniques mounted on these platforms, such as 3D digital photogrammetry and light detection and ranging (LIDAR), have been used to map fault surface curvature, outcrop fault populations, landslides, earthquake surface ruptures and neotectonic geomorphology, among other things. These techniques will soon be augmented with miniaturized magnetic and gravity meters, thermal infrared and hyperspectral sensors. Such field tools bridge the scale gap between outcrop and satellite-based observations, while obtaining high-resolution data (mm-cm scale) over large areas. One of the most important developments over the next few years will therefore be the application of computer vision and artificial intelligence (AI) approaches to facilitate real-time or rapid, semi-automatic extraction of meaningful results from the data, under expert guidance.
