Drivers and Impact of Particle Loss in the Inner Magnetosphere II

Session Description:
The dynamic evolution of the Earth’s radiation belts is the result of the competition between acceleration and loss processes. Recent observations and modeling provided significant advances in our understanding of acceleration mechanisms operating in the radiation belts but the loss mechanisms remain more controversial. Major loss processes include scattering by plasma waves and loss to the magnetopause accompanied by the outward radial diffusion, but identifying and separating the effects of different loss mechanisms can be an extremely challenging task. Quantifying losses over a wide range of energy is important since lower energy particles represent the seed population for acceleration and also provide energy for wave growth. Abstracts are solicited that seek to understand and quantify processes that drive the loss of energetic particles in the inner magnetosphere. We also welcome discussion of the impacts of particle loss, for example, effects on the upper atmosphere, ionospheric conductivity and IM coupling.
