Multiscale and Hybrid Methods for Flow and Transport in Porous Media I

Session Description:
More often than not, effective flow and transport equations fail to accurately describe observation of a broad array of processes in porous media. This includes multiphase flows as well as conservative and reactive transport.  To tackle this, a number of novel approaches have been proposed as alternatives to standard transport models.

This session is devoted to recent advances in such multiscale and hybrid methods, with a focus on multiphase flow and transport in porous media, including, but not limited to:

  • hybrid methods describing physical processes on different scales in different parts of computational domains;
  • multiscale methods using innovative computational closures;
  • mesoscale methods including generalized random walk approaches, Langevin models and stochastic reactive particle methods;
  • multiscale finite-volume and finite element methods;
  • upscaling;
  • other methods for bridging gaps between different scales. 

Applications of these methods to subsurface contaminant migration, bioremediation, geological CO2 sequestration, and related topics are particularly sought.
