Persistent Problems in Multiphase Flow and Transport in Porous Media: From Pore- to Continuum-Scale I

Session Description:
Predicting multiphase and multicomponent flow and transport processes in Earth’s subsurface remains a grand challenge (e.g., CO2 sequestration, hydrocarbon extraction, contaminant transport). Multiphase flow is often viscously or gravitationally unstable, and mass transfer between fluid phases can result in non-trivial phase behavior. Fickian diffusion, mechanical dispersion, chemical reactions, and formation heterogeneities add further complexity. In addition, it is well documented that conventional continuum-scale models oversimplify important pore-scale fluid displacement and transport processes (e.g., mixing and (bio)-reaction), resulting in uncertainties when applied to field-scale operations. Recent developments in pore-scale visualization and modeling techniques for flow and solute transport in multiphase conditions provide necessary information to improve continuum-scale models. We solicit submissions addressing state-of the-art pore-scale visualization techniques, modeling capabilities, and theoretical approaches. We are especially interested in submissions that link pore-scale fluid processes to continuum-scale models and their associated constitutive relationships, as well as alternatives and limitations to conventional continuum-scale models.
