Water and Society: Insights from Hydroeconomic Models for Managing Supply, Quality, and Coordination in Water Resource Systems under Climate Extremes and Uncertainty I

Session Description:
Arid and semi-arid environments cover at least a third of the Earth’s land surface and often host high-population, highly productive agricultural regions. These water demands alter the resilience ecosystems to cope with extreme events like droughts and floods, which might become more frequent under climate change. This session provides a forum to discuss recent advances in water resources planning and management in arid and semi-arid regions. Modeling and analytical tools including system constrained optimization hydroeconomics, agent-based, and econometric models are considered. Water resources planning investigations  from around the world will highlight formulation, development and application of a wide range of tools, integrating supply and demand management options (e.g. economic instruments such as water pricing, water markets, and institutional innovations) to improve the sustainability of long-term water management, balancing ecosystem resilience with urban and agricultural water. Systems analysis is helpful for improving and organizing technical and policy discussions in water-stressed regions.
