Session Description:
The coupling and processing of plasma and energy from the solar wind to the magnetopause and the resulting interaction with the magnetosphere is the focus of this session.  In recent years a significant number of spacecraft and ground-based instruments have sampled the various upstream regions and boundaries – foreshock, bow shock, magnetosheath, magnetopause – with both in situ and remote observations. Modeling and theoretical efforts have also contributed to advance our recent understanding of the physics occurring in these regions.  The session will focus on processing of plasma within these regions and boundary layers, and how it may impact the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction.
