Session Description:
Wave-particle interactions are fundamental physical processes in the acceleration, loss, and transport of energetic particles in the Earth’s radiation belts. Various magnetospheric waves have been identified as the key drivers of energetic particle dynamics, including ULF, EMIC, magnetosonic, chorus, plasmaspheric hiss, as well as time domain structures. Quantifying the role of each wave is crucial to determining the underlying physics of driving particle dynamics in the Earth’s radiation belts. We welcome both modeling and observational studies addressing the quantitative roles of these various waves in causing particle acceleration, transport, and loss in the Earth’s radiation belts. This session is timely for the unprecedented high-quality data from multiple satellite missions (e.g., Van Allen Probes, THEMIS, MMS, Cluster, POES/GOES, BARREL, and CubeSats) and the recently developed state-of-the-art wave and particle-transport models.
