Session Description:
The term "authigenic processes" describes a variety of biotic and abiotic reactions and mineralogical changes occurring on or beneath the seafloor. They are important to understanding fluxes and sinks of organic and inorganic species in the past and present, life in the subsurface, and, importantly, the mechanisms by which paleoceanographic proxies record previous climates and geochemical conditions. We aim to  address processes considered “authigenic” in order to better define what they are, how they are connected, and their chemical implications. The goal of this session is to explore the diversity of individual processes that are generically referred to as authigenic. We encourage perspectives from geochemical, microbiological, mineralogical, sediment provenance, and paleoceanographic research.
