Session Description:
How fast will glaciers and ice sheets retreat and sea levels rise in response to future warming? Will changes be irreversible? Current projections for long-term change vary widely depending on the treatment of feedbacks. Resolving differences in long-term rates, and understanding how short-term natural variability or anthropogenic change may trigger rapid ice loss, is essential for policy development. Recent history is of limited help; observed variability is small compared to the expected future changes. This session explores how paleo-studies constrain understanding of variability, sensitivity, triggers, rates and processes of large-scale ice loss. We will focus on marine-terminating ice systems, their connections to inland ice, sea ice, and modeling of past variability documented in paleo-archives from ice, land, and ocean. We are particularly interested in well-documented examples from marine terminating ice systems in Greenland and Antarctica, although case studies from other regions and examination of relevant modern processes are also welcome.
