Session Description:
Biological cycling of essential nutrients (e.g. N, P and Fe) in the ocean has been integral to global geochemical cycles since the origin of life on Earth. Through coupling with the carbon and oxygen cycles, nutrient cycling generates important feedbacks between the climate system and evolution of life. Recent analytical advances have broadened the scope of questions and enabled studies of the past nutrient cycling with unprecedented precision, detection limits, and temporal resolution. This session welcomes submissions describing new data, modeling results and hypotheses as well as analytical methods focused on nutrient cycling in past oceans. We hope to bring together studies exploring the scope of Earth history, with the goal to encourage discussions between the investigators working on the broad range of timescales, from the Archaean to the Quaternary and perspectives on the future.
