Session ID#: 17495

Session Description:
Liquid water underneath glaciers and ice sheets has been known to exist for decades, however the importance of microbial ecosystems within and below ice has only been recently addressed with the access to sampling provided by new drilling and direct access technologies. Exploring englacial and subglacial environments on Earth and icy bodies in our solar system poses major technological challenges. The corresponding data acquisition potential, however, remains to be fully exploited and offers many opportunities for future research. This session aims to highlight recent achievements in instrumented melting probes, borehole and subglacial robotics, sampling approaches and data acquisition from in situ sensors. This includes discussions of synergies between terrestrial and extraterrestrial ice exploration missions.

We welcome contributions reporting on planned or recently conducted subglacial access projects, clean access technologies, novel in-situ borehole measurements, virtualization strategies from process simulations, as well as contributions on innovative technologies, data acquisition and interpretation concepts.
