Progress in Land Surface Modeling in Cold Regions for Earth System Models I

Session Description:
The predictive capability of land surface models with respect to processes and properties of cold regions has advanced in recent years. Improvements to algorithms representing snowpack evolution, vegetation-snow interaction, and the thermal and hydrological properties of frozen soils offer the promise of enhanced performance in Earth System Models (ESMs), which will enable a better understanding of the response of cold regions to and interaction with changes in climate. For this session, we invite papers presenting the implementation of new or improved algorithms related to snow or land surface processes in cold regions in ESMs or their land surface components. Papers documenting the performance of large-scale models in cold regions, including those participating in the ESM Snow Model Intercomparison Project (ESM-SnowMIP) are also welcome.
