Session Description:
This session concerns the physical processes in the plasma sheet of Earth's and other planets' magnetotails, and their potential connections to the dynamic morphology of auroral structures, especially in the context of substorm phenomena. Auroral structure and dynamics are often used to infer the physical processes deep in the magnetotail, and over years the physical connections between the plasma sheet processes and the auroral structures have become more rigorously established. In particular, significant progress has been made in recent years in identifying the potential connections between the pre-onset auroral signatures and the instabilities of plasma sheet since the start of the CLUSTER and THEMIS missions. This session intends to serve as a platform for collectively reviewing the latest work in both observation and modeling on this highly interesting and intriguing topic, as well as for exploring potential ways that the MMS mission may further advance the research in this area.
