Session Description:
Publications involving detrital geochronology have increased exponentially over the last 40 years due to advances in instrumentation, the broad range of questions that can be addressed, and innovative ideas on how detrital data can be interpreted. Dominant themes include source-to-sink sediment provenance analysis, sediment dispersal patterns, paleogeographic reconstructions, and determination of maximum depositional ages. Disagreements within the community typically focus on acceptable data set size, visualization, quantitative comparison, sediment recycling, and maximum depositional age calculation. Detrital geochronology is also increasingly coupled with rare earth and trace element abundances, which provides supplementary provenance information, but with additional analytical and data management challenges. This session invites research that falls under the broadly defined theme of detrital geochronology – including technique development focused on both analysis and application to geological problems – to highlight emerging trends, showcase novel applications, address conflicting views, and build on a continuing dialogue in this rapidly evolving field.
