Session Description:
Recent research emphasizes the role of rivers in the global carbon budget, but syntheses of organic carbon in freshwater systems have largely treated rivers as carbon conduits with focus on losses to the atmosphere and delivery to oceans. Closing fluvial carbon budgets, however, requires substantial storage within the geosphere. The sources and fates of riverine organic carbon are regulated by feedbacks among climate, geologic controls, lithology, channel form and process, hydrologic regime and connectivity, vegetation, large wood, and soils. To assess the importance of river corridors as both conduits and active contributors to local and global carbon cycling, new research must address the sources, transport, distribution, retention, transformation, and long-term storage of carbon at the interface of aquatic and riparian ecosystems. This session invites contributions that will increase interdisciplinary understanding of carbon dynamics in river corridors with particular focus on sources and sinks within floodplains, hyporheic zones, and river channels.
