Session Description:
Conceptual climate models are a necessary and powerful tool in the study of paleoclimate and have often been used to understand and explain the mechanisms of long-term climate change. In particular, conceptual models are computationally inexpensive and are often amenable to a rigorous analysis of their underlying dynamics. As such, conceptual models can be useful tools for understanding how individual processes interact to produce the large-scale patterns of complexity observable in the climate record. Recent work in this area exists in the intersection of geosciences and mathematics, particularly nonlinear dynamics, including non-smooth systems and systems with differing time scales. In this special session we focus on recent innovations and advances in the use of conceptual models in paleoclimatology.
